NSEP (National Standard Examination in Physics) is the first stage of the Indian Physics Olympiad programme. Students who perform well in NSEP get shortlisted for INPhO (Indian National Physics Olympiad), which is the next major step toward the International Physics Olympiad.
NSEP 2026 will be held on 22 November 2026 from 8:30 AM to 10:30 AM.
If your goal is not just to appear but to score high and qualify for INPhO, you need a focused strategy rather than random preparation.

- Duration: 2 hours
- Mode: Offline (pen and paper)
- Level: Broadly Class 11 & 12 CBSE Physics, but questions are more analytical than board exams
Selection is based on:
- Minimum Admissible Score (MAS)
- Merit Index (MI)
- State-wise representation
- Separate consideration for Group A (Class 12) and Group B (Class 10 & 11)
To stay safe, aim for a strong score rather than just clearing the minimum cutoff.
Important Topics for NSEP 2026
Based on previous year trends, these areas carry significant weight:
High Priority Topics
- Mechanics (Laws of Motion, Work Energy Power, Rotational Motion, Centre of Mass)
- Electrostatics & Current Electricity
- Magnetic Effects of Current & Magnetism
- Ray Optics & Wave Optics
- Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer
- Oscillations & Waves
- Modern Physics
- Alternating Current
- Semiconductors
- Fluid Mechanics
- Gravitation
- Electromagnetic Induction
- Dual Nature of Radiation and Matter
How to Score High in NSEP 2026
1. Build Strong Fundamentals First
Start with NCERT Class 11 and 12 Physics.
Do not jump directly to advanced books. Most NSEP questions are rooted in basic concepts but asked in a deeper way.
Do not jump directly to advanced books. Most NSEP questions are rooted in basic concepts but asked in a deeper way.
2. Move to Advanced Problem Solving
After NCERT, practise from:
- HC Verma (both volumes)
- Selected problems from Irodov (for stronger students)
- Previous year NSEP papers
Part B (multiple correct) can significantly boost your score if attempted carefully.
Do not guess in Part A because of negative marking.

Regular practice of previous year questions is one of the fastest ways to improve accuracy and exam temperament.
5. Improve Speed and Accuracy Together
In 2 hours you need to handle 60 questions.
Practise full-length papers under timed conditions at least 6–8 times before the exam.
Practise full-length papers under timed conditions at least 6–8 times before the exam.
6. Analyse Every Mock and PYQ Test
After every paper, check:
- Which chapters caused mistakes
- Whether errors were conceptual or calculation-based
- Which questions took too much time
- Which questions you should have skipped
3-Month Practical Study Plan (If Starting Now)
Month 1
